Vet for Pet Animal Hospital offers comprehensive senior pet care to best fit the needs of your older four-legged friend. As our pets age, they are more likely to face increased health challenges. Veterinarians generally classify every dog and cat as a geriatric patient when they turn seven years old. This means that we’ll pay special attention to changes in their organ function (e.g., cardiac, liver, or kidney disease), endocrine abnormalities (e.g., hypo- or hyperthyroidism), tumors, and dental disease.

It is even more important to bring your pet in for annual physical examinations and testing at this time in their lives. In addition to the routine physical exam, vaccinations and parasite screening, we recommend including electrocardiograms and laboratory geriatric screening profiles to help us assess their blood, endocrine, and other organ systems.

Palliative care is an option for pet parents who want to engage in an extended goodbye or are uncomfortable with the idea of euthanasia. Pet hospice is an option if your pet is suffering from a terminal illness and a cure is not possible. The focus is to make a pet’s final days or weeks more pleasant with the proper use of pain medications, dietary strategies and human interaction. Pet hospice is not a place, but a personal choice and philosophy based on the principle that death is a part of life and can be dignified. The goal of pet hospice is not to cure your pet’s illness but rather to ensure a peaceful end-of-life experience.

We'll keep your pet comfortable

Our veterinarians will work with you to provide guidance on how to administer intensive home care, and keep an ill pet as comfortable as possible. Every pet parent should also have a back-up plan, which may include euthanasia, in case the animal's suffering cannot be aided with palliative care.
